Reflection Keeps You from Stalling

Practicing reflection will keep your vertical development thriving, even in the most challenging times.

You’ve taken all of your organization’s leadership development programs. And you’ve had an executive coach off and on as your career has grown. You’ve got a reading list, and maybe a Lean Coffee meetup that feels like time well spent. This is great work, but it doesn’t mean your vertical development is complete. In fact, it might be stalled.

Vertical development is a constant growth process rather than a path with a start and finish. So well-intended people have a tendency to stall their development without planning to. Reflection can keep your vertical development from stalling or even stopping.

Not all reflective moments are as obvious as a sunset on the Big Island of Hawaii. Seek regular moments each day.

One of the most overlooked tools for vertical development is the practice of reflection. Mindfulness, journalling, reflection notes, long walks, quiet time…It’s less about how you do it and more about how often you do it. With reflection, a person can have the mental and emotional space to explore the truth of the current state. For example: What is arising? What is releasing? What has unnecessary attachment?

Keep your vertical development thriving by practicing reflection at least once a week. Notice the change.
