Managerial Courage

The usual benefits of visual management are well known: See the big picture, structure your activities, watch and improve performance, and engage everyone.

There is an outcome from these benefits that is often overlooked: that visual management grows managerial courage.

Without visual management, when things didn’t go well, the results were not known to most until perhaps a big change was made. (Almost) no one saw it coming. This change felt completely out of the blue, and caused chaos and distrust.

With visual management, there is the opportunity for leaders and teams to talk about the work and the impediments in real time. Both leaders and teams gain confidence in honest discussions, and with confidence comes courage to talk about the difficult work,  and  difficult decisions.
